I love Fern! Such a great place with THE BEST food in town. I am always blown away by the deliciousness in everything I order.
BUT --- So I heard that Chef Alyssa Gorelick is no longer with the restaurant?! Can this be right? This would not be good!
To be honest, I am not sure if I will go to Fern anymore. The food was the reason I went, and I read in other reviews that she created the entire menu and every dish on it (for every season). If it is true, that she's no longer with the restaurant anymore... I'm not sure if I will go anymore. It was the good food that kept me coming back!
I hope Chef Alyssa continues to have recipes published because I love trying to cook them at home! They never end up quite as good, but it's fun to try her concoctions!
First of all, I would like to say that I am so glad that Fern exists as there is NOWHERE in this town to eat well as a vegetarian. (With the exception of the excellent Luna's Living Kitchen, which closes at 4PM and has a small menu).
I eat at Fern once a week and it is pretty good. I like the Beet Tagliatelle and the OM burger is very filling and tasty especially when paired with goat cheese.
However, many of the items can be hit-or miss but I like to think they are getting better. The service and atmosphere can be awkward. They should ditch the effort to be upscale and go more casual.
Love, love, love this place. It has completely changed my mind about vegetarian/vegan cooking. Appetizers are my favorite, and it's great to make a tapas-type meal from those alone. Soups are out of this world, and the deserts are very tasty. Everything is presented elegantly, and our service has always been good. I just hate that they are closed on Mondays, my favorite day not to cook!

What Fern does is (gently) blast you in the face with this message: Vegetarian fare can be vivid, diverse, complex in flavor and texture. It can be meaty, it can be delicate, it can be a cuisine of essence, not of substitution.
