10th annual Joedance Film Festival
The 10th annual Joedance Film Festival, which raises money for pediatric cancer research at Atrium Health Levine Children’s, begins Thursday, August 1 and continues through Saturday, August 3, from 7 - 10:30 p.m. at The Charlotte Ballet, 701 N. Tryon St, Charlotte, NC. Joedance screens original films by filmmakers with a North or South Carolina connection. Selected films will be announced on June 15, 2019. VIP reception starts at 6 p.m. each night. General admission begins at 7 p.m. each night. The grand finale of the 15th Annual Lake Lure Olympiad – a 3-day family sports festival that showcases the beautiful scenery of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, the Race to the Rock is a challenging 5k run or 25-mile bike race that climbs 900 feet in the last 3 miles (a 7-9% grade) to finish at the base of Chimney Rock. The rewarding 75-mile views from the finish line overlooking Lake Lure are enough to take your breath away… or what’s left of it! This is the ONLY TIME you can ever run or bike up to Chimney Rock. Grab your bike or walking shoes and join 24 Foundation for its signature fundraiser – 24 Hours of Booty! The 18th annual 24 Hours of Booty presented by Levine Cancer Institute is a charity non-competitive cycling and walking event geared for all ages and abilities. Come ride or stride on Charlotte’s famed “Booty Loop” in Myers Park and help change the course of cancer - 7:00pm Friday, July 26 to 7:00pm Saturday, July 27. Can’t attend the event? Living History
18th Century Militia Muster
All males ages 16-60 were required by law to serve in North Carolina’s militia during the French and Indian War. These civilians would gather at appointed times during the year to practice military drill and could be used to quickly form an army for defense at times of invasion. Historic interpreters representing the Rowan County militia will offer on-going displays of military camp life, as well as featured musket firing demonstrations. 10am-4pm. Free ($2 donation suggested.)
