Venue Review: Nix Burger & Brew
The Charlotte Observer
When it comes to burgers, Nix means yes.
Charlotte loves new and gourmet burgers and Nix Burger & Brew uptown provides both.
The menu lists 18 varieties of burgers, from a plain burger to a Cajun Black & Bleu Burger with Tasso ham. You can order yours “pink” or “done.”
On our visit, the beef burger ($7.95) was big, juicy, well-proportioned on the sesame seed bun. It comes topped with a side, Nix Sauce and lettuce, tomato and pickles. The dollop of sauce was tasty but small. Do you go with just the sauce or add ketchup?
Ultimately, the burger needed some ketchup. Or more sauce.
The onion rings are lightly battered with a good taste. Among the best around. But there weren't enough of them and the plate looked bare. The crinkle cut fries are terrific, from their crispy outside to their tender center. And there were plenty.
The Swiss mushroom burger ($8.95) was also juicy and had 'shrooms dripping everywhere.
Seems like the trendiest restaurant thing around here is to put a fried egg on top of your entree. The Charlotte Late Night Burger ($9.95) has an egg, bacon, chili and pimento cheese. Messy? Yes. Worth it? You bet.
Good selection of beer and wine and drinks with names like The Bobcat and The Deacon . Service was friendly and swift. Yes, they have salads. And hot dogs and dessert.
Nix is in the renovated Groucho's deli spot on Fifth Street around the corner from Capital Grille. They're open seven days for lunch, dinner and late night. A good spot for fortifications after clubbing and before hitting the road home.
If you like Big Daddy's Burger Bar on East Boulevard, you'll like Nix Burger & Brew.
