THE JAZZ ROOM: An Evening with Saxophonist Steve Wilson

Jazz
“One of the finest saxophonists in the business”, Charlotte welcomes renowned New York-based saxophonist Steve Wilson. Critically-acclaimed bandleader and “musician’s musician”, Wilson has brought his distinctive, easygoing sound to more than 150 recordings. In this evening at the JAZZ ROOM, we will enjoy Wilson’s own recent blockbuster LP “Sit Back, Relax, and Unwind” and much more. Wilson’s easygoing, soulful style “hits spiritual currents we don't always hear.” The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. Steve Wilson is an Associate Professor at City College of New York, and on faculty at the Juilliard School. Mac Arnold & Plate Full O' Blues plays Muddy Waters

Blues, Jazz, Live Music in Bar/Club
Mac Arnold and the Plate Full ‘o Blues plays Muddy Waters, bringing the foundation of blues, soul, and funk to this month’s JAZZ ROOM. The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. Premiere Thursday shows present a fresh kaleidoscope of exclusively themed programming for one-night only. Muddy Waters, the "father of modern Chicago blues", was an important figure on the post-war blues scene. Muddy Waters' influence is incalculable, on blues as well as Rock music. In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band recorded several blues classics, including "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready". His electric blues sound at the 1960 Newport Jazz Festival fit in well with the "love generation." Waters continued to record with rock musicians throughout the 1960s and '70s, and won his first Grammy Award in 1971. He captivated audiences with his performance known as "The Last Waltz," an exceptionally star-studded affair that was released as a film by Martin Scorsese in 1978. South Carolinian, band leader and guitarist Mac Arnold’s first band included James Brown on piano. In Chicago, Arnolds toured and recorded with none other than the Muddy Waters Band, helping shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement. Moving to LA, his music career reads like a “who’s who” list of blues and R&B: producer on Soul Train, backup band for Otis Redding, B.B. King, and the Sanford & Son TV show. He has shared the stage with Eric Clapton, Big Mama Thornton and John Lee Hooker. Back to his South Carolina roots, Mac is serving up a mess of Blues with his own band: Austin Brashier on guitar and vocals, Max Hightower on keyboards, harmonica, guitar, bass, and vocals, Scotty Hawkins or Dizzy Dizzy on drums and vocals, and Mac Arnold on vocals, bass and Gas Can Guitars.

Dawn Anthony sings the iconic Nancy Wilson at THE JAZZ ROOM

Jazz, Live Music in Bar/Club
Vocalist extraordinaire Dawn Anthony re-imagines the warm rich melodies of iconic jazz singer Nancy Wilson whose career spanned over five decades. The JAZZ ROOM @ The Stage Door Theater provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. Nancy Wilson was an American singer whose career spanned over five decades, and well represents her Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. With three Grammys and 70 albums, she is notable for her single "(You Don't Know) How Glad I Am" and her version of the standard "Guess Who I Saw Today". During her performing career Wilson was labeled a singer of blues, jazz, R&B, pop, and soul, a "consummate actress", and "the complete entertainer". The title she preferred, however, was "song stylist", which most summons her warm rich sound and ability to vividly tell a song’s story. Dawn Anthony is a teaching artist, lecturer, and performer based in Charlotte, NC. Dawn earned her degree in music from Queens University of Charlotte, and pursues her love for learning, performing and teaching through cultural exchanges and musical collaborations. Born in Philadelphia but raised in Georgia, she considers herself a northerner with a southern heart. Singing everything from classical to jazz, and musical theater to gospel--she thrives on making connections with others beyond the words and notes on the page.

JAZZ ROOM Special Edition: Matt Lemmler re-imagines the music of Stevie Wonder

Jazz
Renowned New Orleans pianist, vocalist, composer Matt Lemmler and friends present his jazz-inspired arrangements of the timeless music of the great Stevie Wonder. The JAZZ ROOM provides a casual and intimate setting with tables and a full bar, reminiscent of the classic jazz rooms of yesteryear. “Stevie Wonder is a much-beloved American icon and an indisputable genius not only of R&B but popular music in general. Blind virtually since birth, Wonder's heightened awareness of sound helped him create vibrant, colorful music teeming with life and ambition,” from www.allmusic.com. A prominent figure in popular music during the latter half of the 20th century, Wonder has recorded more than 30 U.S. top ten hits, sold over 100 million records worldwide, and won 25 Grammy Awards (the most ever won by a solo artist). In addition to the 25 Grammy Awards, as well as a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996, he is one of only two artists and groups who have won the Grammy for Album of the Year three times as the main credited artist. Matt Lemmler is considered to be one of the most original musicians (piano, vocal, arranger, composer, educator, producer) to recently emerge from the birthplace of jazz. Raised just blocks away from the home of legendary New Orleans pianist/vocalist Fats Domino, Matt remembers a childhood in the Lower 9th Ward where music constantly filled the house. After earning a Bachelor of Music from Loyola University and a Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music in NYC, Matt toured four years with Andrew Lloyd Weber’s The Phantom of the Opera. After touring, he came back to the Big Easy and sharpened his skills with some of New Orleans finest bandleaders including: Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band (over 100 years old); Herb Tassin and the Blue Room Orchestra, and master clarinetist Pete Fountain.
